New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams declared his plan to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Just last month, Adams had publicly condemned Cuomo, calling him a âsnake and a liarâ and accusing him of having âa history of marginalizing Black political contenders.â Yet, in a recent development, Adams reversed course, revealing he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in communities where he holds significant backing.
âIt's essential to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have experienced urban displacement on how vital this race is,â Adams remarked.
Adams continued, âThey have watched their housing costs rise in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and Iâm going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.â
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has made headlines internationally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent announced they would decline Adamsâs endorsement if extended.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.
During a unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams responded to reporters asking about the support announcement by stating, âIâll be with Andrew this evening.â
This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicksâ first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a heated candidate debate.
