American flight controllers are more and more looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to setbacks due to climate and other issues.

Over 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to secure another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest after the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my staff focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights stretching upward to the city of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were back on schedule by midday.

Travel at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA said DFW, the second most active airport in the US, could encounter problems from low staffing in the afternoon.

The FAA advised passengers in California to consult airlines about updated flight schedules.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest times to fly in the US.

Strain on American aviation helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It prompted a number of flight controllers to stay home on the same day on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as president, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, bringing an end to the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
